Description
Aesthete, politician and patron of the arts Philip Sassoon gave the best parties of his time, so they said. His time was the glorious 1930s, and the parties were attended by Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw, Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence. But Sassoon was more of a Gatsby figure himself, lurking in the background and carving out a substantial political career; he was right hand man to Douglas Haig during WWI and then for David Lloyd George during the settlement of the peace. Yet despite being close to Edward VIII during the abdication crisis, Sassoon, as the heir of a wealthy family of Jewish traders from the souks of Baghdad, still craved acceptance into the closed quarters of British high society. This is the hardback first edition in very good condition.
