The George Sand and Gustave Flaubert Letters

£25.00

Literary monoliths George Sand and Gustave Flaubert corresponded for 12 years, while Sand was living in semi-retirement at Nohant and Flaubert, 17 years her junior, was embarking on the seven-year labour of writing Sentimental Education in the family home at Croisset. The letters show the playful nature of their deep friendship, underscored with differing views on the major political events of the day, such as the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. This first edition was published in 1922 and has marks from folded corners on several pages, but is otherwise in good condition.
