Seven Pillars of Wisdom

£45.00

Originally published in 1926 under the title Revolt in the Desert, T.E. Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom was an autobiographical account of Lawrence’s experiences during the Arab Revolt of 1916–1918, when he was based in Wadi Rum in Jordan as a member of the British Forces. With the support of Emir Faisal and his tribesmen, he helped organise and carry out attacks on the Ottoman forces from Aqaba in the south to Damascus in the north. The title comes from the Book of Proverbs: “Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars”. The 1926 version was doubled in length for this version, published in 1939 in two volumes after Lawrence’s death in 1935. “I loved you, so I drew these tides of men into my hands and wrote my will across the sky in stars/To earn you Freedom, the seven pillared worthy house, that your eyes might be shining for me when we came.” These two volumes are in good condition for their age.
