Description
Subtitled “In the footsteps of Stamford Raffles” this curious melange of biography, fantasy and travel journal has strong echoes of the Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser. Author Nigel Barley sets off on a literary and imaginative journey through the lands that Raffles knew 200 years previously, from Malacca to Java, Bali and ultimately Singapore, where he founded the famous Raffles Hotel (where the Singapore Sling was invented). Along the way, Barley encounters weird tribes, eccentric tribal leaders and stays in an hotel where the Goddess of the South Seas keeps a room. This is the first edition, published in 1991, and is in mint condition.
