Description
“Sherlock Holmes took his bottle from the corner of the mantelpiece, and his hypodermic syringe from its neat Morocco case. With his long, white, nervous fingers he adjusted the delicate needle, and rolled back his left shirt-cuff. For some little time his eyes rested thoughtfully upon the sinewy forearm and wrist, all dotted and scarred with innumerable puncture marks. Finally, he thrust the sharp point home, pressed down the shiny piston, and sank back into the velvet-lined arm-chair with a long sigh of satisfaction.” The Sign of Four commences with our weary detective so bored that he injects cocaine to keep his mind alert. Luckily a young woman soon knocks on his door, who has received one pearl a year in the post for the last six years, and now a mystery letter telling her she is a wronged woman. This hardback edition was published in 1920 by T Nelson & Sons as part of the ‘Nelson’s Library’ series and is in good condition.
