One-Upmanship First Edition

Stephen Potter’s Oneupmanship series was a huge influence in the early years of The Chap. One-Upmanship was the third in the series, preceded by Gamesmanship and Lifemanship, and this is the one that will be most familiar to readers of The Chap, and indeed viewers of School For Scoundrels, the Boulting Brothers’ 1960 film starring Terry-Thomas and Ian Carmichael. As Potter explains himself in the introduction, “How to make the other man feel that something has gone wrong, however slightly. The Lifeman is never caddish himself, but how simply and certainly, often, he can make the other man feel a cad, and over prolonged periods.” There then follows a series of techniques, amusingly explained and illustrated, to show how precisely always to be ‘one-up’ on one’s fellow man. This is the first edition, published in 1952, and is in very good condition.
