Description
The first of many chronicles of life at an English public school, Tom Brown’s Schooldays was based on the author Thomas Hughes’ own experience at Rugby School. More familiar to Chap readers might be the character of school bully Harry Flashman, the caddish hero of George Macdonald Fraser’s vast oeuvre. In this novel, Flashman’s debut as a character, he is defeated by Tom with the help of Diggs, a kind, comical, older boy. The second half of the book deals with Tom’s emotional development, building up to a cricket match that concludes the tale and sees Tom Brown ready for the world of gentlemen, though more from the cricket than anything the teachers were able to dispense. This is the 1928 edition published by Macmillan, bound in leather and with gilt-edge pages, and is in excellent condition.
