Description
Anita Leslie’s childhood memoir, The Gilt and the Gingerbread, brought to life the glitter of her aristocratic years, while this more sombre sequel recounts the war years. Appointed by Sir Walter Monkton to edit a troops newspaper in Egypt, Leslie (a cousin of Winston Churchill) found herself transcribing copy from Morse, with Arab assistants who spoke not a word of English. Finding an untapped skill for driving military vehicles, she was given the job of driving ambulances for the French army, ending up perilously close to the German border after being chased through the Black Forest by Nazi troops. This the first edition from 1983 in very good condition.
