Published during the Chap’s tenure as a bi-monthly magazine, this issue devoted itself to musical Chaps, with an interview with Mr. Bruce of the Correspondents. We also encountered electro-swing and Chap-hop, and met Australian king of hokum blues CW Stoneking. Queen Ranavalova, the terrifying monarch of Madagascar who features in one of the Flashman novels, was immortalised in a biography, while Gordon Bennet’s motoring victories were celebrated. But pride of place in this edition went to Nathaniel Adams’ report from the Congo, where he encountered the legendary Sapeurs.
