Chap Autumn 19 Edition

in News by

The Chap gallops into its second century, hot on the heels of publication of our 100th edition this May, with issue 101. Helen McCrory reveals the dark secrets of creating the role of Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, and we also meet Alison McCosh, who created all the male and female costumes on the series. We report on the Grand Flaneur Walk, with photographic documentation of the three global chapters in London, Dusseldorf and Los Angeles, with an accompanying tract on the history of the flaneur.
Sartorial features include the British Shoe Company, Yarmouth Oilskins, Workwear Jackets and Frahm Clothing. We meet the costume designer on the new film of Downton Abbey and pay a visit to Head of the River in Oxford for a supernatural dinner. Historical chaps and chapettes featured include Orson Welles, Maureen O’Hara and Dennis Price in Kind Hearts and Coronets, while back in the living world, Olly Smith takes a breathtaking drive to Le Mans in an Aston Martin DB7 GTA and Nick Ostler spots some Autumn migrants with his binoculars.
Travel features include a mission to Jerez de la Frontera to seek an old neighbour of Sebastian Horsley, a trip to Texas by a cigar-chomping Devon lady with a penchant for pistols, and Chris Sullivan’s gastronomic tour of Riga. Holly Rose Swinyard explores the dark world of HP Lovecraft via a video game based on Call of Cthulhu, while Alexander Larman reviews the decadent dandy bible that is JK Huysman’s Against Nature.
All this plus regulars Am I Chap? – joined by special edition Suis-je Flaneur, an interview with tattooed historian Dan Jones, book reviews, crossword and our antiques review.

The Chap Autumn 19, in newsagents 16th August and from www.thechap.net

The Chap was founded in 1999 and is the longest-serving British magazine dedicated to the gentlemanly way of life, with its own quirky, satirical take on a style that has recently entered the mainstream.
