Night of a Thousand Waistcoats

The Chap will celebrate 25 years of publication with our grandest party ever on 12th October.

There have been many ‘nights of a thousand waistcoats’ over the years, but 2024 is the year for the grandest chap party of all. This year we celebrate twenty-five years on magazine racks and doormats, and thus shall be pulling out all the stops when it comes to marking this momentous milestone. On 12th October 2024 The Grand Silver Jubilee Ball will fling open its doors to those who have revelled before, those who wish to revel anew and those who were too young to revel the first time around.

The venue is the splendidly louche White Eagle Club at Hamilton House in Balham, where doors will open at 7pm and the frolics will continue until 2am. Entertainment will come from Mr. B the Gentleman Rhymer, disc jockey Louise Holland and the Silver Jubilee Hot Jazz Serenaders, as well as speeches, general back slapping and grand prizes awarded for best dressed chap and chapette, best facial hair and best hairdo. This will be our first proper shindig since 2019 and, since it marks 25 years of publication, it will be our grandest yet. You are advised to wear the finest outfit you have ever contemplated wearing, and to wear it well, for the sartorial competition will be stiff.

Previous Chap Balls have lured the finest dressed chaps and chapettes from their sartorial lairs all over the country. We have seen men wearing full Regency costume bend their enormous top hats under the eaves; we have seen men flouncing with the flamboyance of dear Oscar Wilde; we have seen women with hairdos that would repel a bombing raid by the Luftwaffe and dresses that somehow bypassed rationing fabric rules. All such sartorial triumphs will be rewarded at the Grand Silver Jubilee Ball, in the form of enormously generous prizes from our sponsors.

The Chap was founded in 1999 and is the longest-serving British magazine dedicated to the gentlemanly way of life, with its own quirky, satirical take on a style that has recently entered the mainstream.
