Many Withnail and I fans assumed that the protagonist was the creation of the febrile mind of director Bruce Robinson, but the character of Withnail was actually based on his close friend at drama school, Vivian Mackerell. Another of Vivian’s chums, Colin Bacon, penned this biography of Mackerell in 2010, telling the real story of the man who, in real life, behaved more or less exactly like his fictional counterpart. Destined for movie stardom, Mackerell showed initial promise as an actor, but was too distracted by alcohol to maintain focus on his career, descending into the debauched behaviour that Robinson turned into his cult film. He ended his days in hospital, injecting sherry directly into his stomach while uttering the line, “Give me a fucking pre-med you fuckers. I’m a personal friend of Sir Lancelot Spratt.” This is the first edition in good condition, with some creases where the pages were turned down at the corners.
