Description
Although not official RAF issue, white silk scarves such as this may as well have been, since every fighter pilot who scrambled into a Spitfire wore one in the cockpit. The volume of cloth provided warmth at freezing altitudes, while the softness of the woven silk prevented chafing from the itchy serge of the RAF uniform, allowing the pilot to give his full concentration to knocking Messerschmits out of the sky. This one from the 1930s/40s is in good condition except for a couple of moth holes on one side, which can easily be concealed when worn.
