As Olly Smith so eloquently puts it in his drinks column, “As the Lowlands lead to the Highlands, so the first hundred Chaps will surely lead to the second hundred.” This, our 99th edition, does not skimp on the usual packed measure of quality, variety and scope, beginning with an interview with Hollywood actor Billy Zane, a man whose sartorial obsessions easily matched this publication’s. Other chaps interviewed are Antiques Roadshow presenter John Bly, who confessed never to have broadcast sober, as well as towering British novelist William Boyd, musician Darren Hayman and rodeo tailor Manuel Cuevas.
Chaps profiled who are no longer with us, at least in body, are rakish actor Peter O’Toole, monocled Austrian actor/director Erich Von Stroheim, Ginger Man author JP Donleavy, Reilly Ace of Spies and dandizette Lucille Ball. We take to the skies to observe Spring migrants in a new birding column, as well as advising on which vintage binoculars to use. Chris Sullivan chronicles the dastardly doings of effete Parisian 18th century thugs Les Incroyables, while David Evans road tests some suitable snow-clobber in Antarctica. Other sartorial features include DNA Groove, Natalino and Dueple Socks, as well as a nightwear fashion photo shoot at an hotel in Brighton; we also visit classy seaside eaterie The Ivy in the Lanes.
Our reporter from Los Angeles reports on the latest LA Tweed Pub Crawl, we also travel to Ecuador to purchase a Panama Hat, while Monty Delaunay offers advice on coping with the modern world in new column Chapmanship. Film Reviews tackles The Comfort of Strangers, while books on Philip Larkin, Neil Tennant and Laurie Cunningham feature in Book Reviews.
All this plus regular features Peacocks & Magpies, Am I Chap? and our crossword.
