Description
Christopher Hibbert’s detailed study of the Grand Tour was published in 1969 and has never been bettered (although there are few non-chaps who’d be interested in further details). The origins of the Grand Tour are outlined, before Hibbert sets off on a journey with the reader, each chapter covering a specific region of the Grand Tour, from France to the Low Countries. “How much a dunce, that has been sent to roam, excels a dunce that has been kept at home” was a question asked by many fathers who were expected to fund their scion’s costly roamings around Europe, not to mention the added doctors’ bills (usually for cases of gonorrhea) and bribes to unscrupulous border police. The book is richly illustrated with original engravings of the Grand Tour, depicting the sort of thrills sought by the young aristocrats of England.
