Description
The forecast end to the global lockdown heralded a golden age of music and culture (which sadly didn’t come to pass), so we looked back at how the post-Spanish flu pandemic of the 1920s ushered in the age of the flapper and ultimately introduced the world’s capitals to nightclub culture. Josephine Baker was the queen of Paris cabaret at that time, as Chris Sullivan explained in a gallop through the decorated showgirl’s life. Colleen Darnell looked at the influence of ancient Egypt on the fashion and interiors of the 1920s, while Gustav Temple recreated some of Eric Ravilious’ paintings by stomping around the Sussex countryside. Plus: Clare Bradley, the Marx Brothers, Talking Pictures TV, Anna May Wong and Patricia Highsmith biographer Andrew Wilson.
