Description
On the night of the 23/24th September 1916, a number of Zeppelins, including the new Super Zeppelins (L31, L32, L33 and L34), attacked London and the Home Counties. L32, commanded by Oberleutnant Werner Peterson of the German Naval Airship Division, was shot down from the sky by Second Lieutenant Frederick Sowrey, crashing at Snail’s Hall Farm, Great Burstead, near Billericay. Before police could cordon off the area, members of the public took souvenirs from the wrecked L32, many in the form of the cords that supported the gas bags within the zeppelin’s metal frame. One piece of cord was turned into this souvenir watch chain with a leather fob, the tarnished silver clip bearing the inscription “Zeppelin L32” in cursive script. The item was clearly made by a silversmith yet has never been used, the leather fob showing no signs of ever being fastened. The full story of the wreckage may be read here
