Published in 1993 by Ross Leckie, a regular contributor to The Oldie, this is an amusing book of facts and curiosities about the world of food and drink, with quotations from those as diverse as Groucho Marx, Christopher Columbus and A.A. Milne. The book chronicles the entire year month-by-month, for example: 24th April 1671: Fritz-Karl Vatel, Steward to the Prince de Conde, commits suicide because the oysters he had ordered for that evening’s dinner in honour of Louis XIV had not arrived. They do so fifteen minutes after Vatel’s death. This is the first edition in very good condition.
