Victorian Watch Chain

£75.00

Victorian vulcanite mourning watch chain dating from 1880/90. The vulcanising process used India rubber mixed with sulphur which hardened it. During the Victorian period, a gentleman would remain in his mourning ‘weeds’ for up to two years after the death of his wife. The ends of the chain are made from Japanned brass – a lacquering process typical of its day.
