Ghoulishly named after the keepers of graves in cemeteries and in a suitably gothic, hexagonal bottle with a skull in a top hat logo, The Sexton Single Malt was created by one of the few female master blenders in the industry, Alex Thomas. Produced from triple distilled 100% malted barley, the spirit is aged in casks imported from Jerez in Spain and formerly used for Oloroso, at the darker end of the sherry spectrum. The Sexton is distilled in County Antrim, near the famous Giant’s Causeway, whose peculiar hexagonal stones influenced the Gothic design of the bottle.
Sexton Single Malt is triple-distilled, producing a smooth distillate with a slightly sweeter, fruity spirit than the more peaty Scottish single malts. It is well known that less than a quarter of the grain used to produce many Irish whiskeys is actually from Ireland. The Sexton, however, is made from 100% Irish malted barley, from Wexford and Tipperary on the south east coast of Ireland. Alex Thomas distills the Sexton in the copper stills of Bushmills, but the brand is a separate entity, owned by New York-based drinks giant Proximo Spirits, to the whiskies produced by Bushmills.

The Chap Hip Flask was launched in April this year. This circular stainless steel hip flask is made by world-renowned manufacturer A.E. Williams, members of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers, who have been making pewterware for Royal Palaces, cathedrals and stately homes since 1779. The Chap Hip Flask can hold 75ml of whisky, rum or cognac, with a helpful porthole to the rear to view current levels of spirit. This hip flask comes with two stainless steel cups and a filling funnel to avoid spillage. The motto ‘Nunc Est Bibendum’ comes from an ode by Roman lyric poet Horace from 30 BCE. The ode is a celebration of drinking, carousing and dancing, and continues: ‘nunc pede libero pulsanda tellus’, all of which roughly translates as ‘Now is the time for drinking, and stamping the ground with a free foot’. Horace’s ode was written to celebrate the victory of the Augustan forces over Mark Antony in the Final War of the Roman Republic, but the hip flask will suit any occasion for celebration.
