Betjeman: The Bonus of Laughter

£4.99

The book that sparked one of the most famous literary spats ever, the third volume of Bevis Hillier’s monumental biography of John Betjeman (which took him 25 years in total) was not as well received as he hoped in some quarters. Fellow belle-lettriste A.N. Wilson called it “a hopeless mishmash”, and when Wilson himself embarked on a single-volume biography of Betjeman, Hillier saw his chance for revenge. He forged a letter, purportedly from Betjeman to Honor Tracy, declaring his romantic admiration for her, and provided it to Wilson. Duly published in the biography, the fake letter used acrostic code to spell out the phrase ‘A.N. Wilson is a shit’. This is the paperback edition in very good condition.
