A Good Year For The Chaps

in News by

2019 was a significant year for The Chap, with the celebration of 20 years of anarcho-dandyism and publication of our 100th edition in May. This special centenary edition featured the greatest chap of all time, Terry-Thomas, on the front cover and an interview with the greatest living chap Leslie Phillips. We also marked this momentous anniversary with publication of Best of The Chap, a collection of the finest articles from the last 100 editions in a splendid 300-page hardback volume. This was also the year we launched our very own eau de cologne, Flâneur, as well as its accompanying range of gentlemen’s grooming products.
In July the chaps gathered their hats, cravats and walking canes for the Grand Flaneur Walk – a leisurely saunter without purpose, which created rather a stir on the sunny streets of London, Los Angeles and Dusseldorf. This elegant perambulation will be repeated in 2020 in London, Paris and New York.
August 2019 saw The Chap Olympiad make its first transfer to the countryside, taking place at Firle Vintage Fair in East Sussex, where Umbrella Jousting, Well Dressage and brand-new event Picnic Vaulting took place among the rolling hills of the South Downs. More familiar surroundings embraced The Chap Olympiad at 2019’s Goodwood Revival, which this year took place in glorious sunshine instead of the usual September downpour. We shall be back in 2020 to liven up the annual vintage motoring event with our sporting tomfoolery.
2019 also saw the release of the first Peaky Blinders soundtrack, and The Chap supplied the sartorial sleevenotes for both CD and vinyl editions of this splendid collection. This was also the year in which we encountered likely chaps Kevin Rowland, Leslie Phillips and Ben Schott, and less likely but still intriguing chaps Billy Zane, Vic Reeves and Manuel Cuevas.

The Chap was founded in 1999 and is the longest-serving British magazine dedicated to the gentlemanly way of life, with its own quirky, satirical take on a style that has recently entered the mainstream.
