Kennedy was the first US president not to wear a top hat at his inauguration, remaining hatless for the entirety of his term until being assassinated in 1963. American men quickly followed suit, leading to the demise of the hat in US menswear. Author Neil Steinberg looks at the broader decline of headwear in the world, acknowledging the importance of the hat previously, in arcane rituals like straw hat/felt hat season, the straw boater riots of 1922 and the history of the top hat.
