Description
During Victorian times, street hawkers were so numerous that they had to create a licensing system so that the public would know which were the bona fide traders in everything from ground coffee to oysters. The official traders were given a brass arm plate to wear, fixed around the upper arm with a leather fastening. This one, number 314 (wares unknown) remains intact in every way except for the missing smaller piece of leather to attach it at the rear. It could easily be repurposed as a belt buckle, or worn by someone selling equivalent wares on today’s city streets, such as espresso coffee, selfie sticks or Oyster cards. The plate measures 100x70cm.
