A Tramp Abroad

Original price was: £45.00.Current price is: £25.00.

The fourth of Mark Twain’s six travel books published during his lifetime, A Tramp Abroad is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to the first volume, The Innocents Abroad (1869). According to Twain, it was “written by one loafer for a brother loafer to read”. The journey taken by the two protagonists, based on Twain and his real friend Joseph Twichell, sees them travel through Southern Europe, stopping for adventures in Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. Interspersed with the authentic travel notes are Twain’s fictional stories such as Bluejay Yarn and The Man who put up at Gadsby’s, along with many German Legends, some invented by the author himself. A Tramp Abroad has always been appreciated more for its comic value than its travel narrative, as well as its humorous illustrations – some provided by Twain himself. This is the hardback edition published by Chatto & Windus in 1880 and is in good condition.
