Description
Written by Daniel Farson, Soho habitue, journalist and friend to Francis Bacon, Escapades is a collection of his travel journalism from the 1980s, as well as some pieces specially commissioned for the book. His travels take him from seaside resorts like Blackpool, to the remote Blasket Isles off Ireland, into northern Europe via Germany and Austria, thence to more remote places such as Tasmania and the Gorge of Samaria. One chapter recounts his voyage around the world with the merchant navy in all its grisly detail of being assigned to the boiler room, while another chapter sees him visit the castle in Romania upon which Bram Stoker (Farson’s great uncle) based Dracula. The tone of each piece is engaging, witty and personal, providing both riveting insights into the times and also an amusing and self effacing portrait of an Englishman abroad. This first edition is in very good condition.
