The first part of the book details the violent struggle for the dominance of Western Europe between Louis XI of France and Charles the Rash, Duke of Burgundy. The second part recounts the first French invasion of Italy in 1494 under Louis’s son Charles VIII. Commynes’ memoirs conclude in 1498 following the death of Charles and Commynes entering the service of his successor Louis XII. This is the 1973 Folio Society edition of the first part of the memoirs, with the original slipcase and in very good condition.
