Description
Before deciding whether to marry Chandrapore’s local magistrate, Adela Quested wants to discover the “real India” for herself. Newly arrived from England, she agrees to see the Marabar Caves with the charming Dr Aziz. Through this one harmless event, Forster exposes the absurdity, hysteria and depth of cultural ignorance that existed in British India in the twenties. First published in 1924, E.M. Forster’s novel presents an examination and critique of colonialism in which he questions the rights and principles of one nation in governing another. He also poses questions such as: can two nations that are far removed from each other form a real understanding of one another? Can real friendship and comprehension exist between those who are not on equal terms, where one party is at a disadvantage and where the stronger condescends rather than comprehends? This paperback edition was published by Penguin in 1986 and is in very good condition.
