The Power of the Dog

£75.00

People’s obsession with their dogs might seem like a fairly recent, post-pandemic matter, yet as far back as 1911, ladies like Maud Earl were obsessively chronicling theirs and others’ pet hounds. However, back then old Maud was doing a bit more than sticking a video on Tick Tock of her labrador snoring in a funny way. She was producing finely painted plates of all the great hounds of the world in oil paint, and then getting her chum A. Croxton Smith to describe them, in fruity language like, “Of all the saints in the calendar the sportsman has most reason to remember the goodly Abbot of the Ardennes, St. Hubert, after whom were named two strains of mighty hounds, the black and the white.” This large-format hardback is in very good condition.
