Description
As chronicled in CHAP Summer/Autumn 24, Robert Smith Surtees was a Victorian author of humorous books about the huntin’ shootin’ and fishin’ set. His hero, Mr. Jorrocks the cockney fox-hunting grocer, has his place among the great British comic characters, along with Falstaff and Uncle Toby. In this collection of stories selected by Lionel Gough, the reader makes the acquaintance of a gallery of sporting eccentrics – Mr. Soapey Sponge, Lord Scamperdale, Mr. Puffington, Mr. Facey Romford and Miss Lucy Glitters. This is a first edition hardback in good condition, published in 1953 by Rupert Hart-Davis.
