Lord Rochester’s Monkey

Original price was: £25.00.Current price is: £18.75.

A book about outrageous rakehell and confidante of Charles II written by famed author Graham Greene? Surely such a book is too good to be true? Reader, this very tome exists. Written in the 1930s but not published until 1974, between his novels Travels With My Aunt and The Human Factor, Greene felt passionate enough about his subject to have hauled this biography from his archives and completed it, allowing it to be published in a large format with plenty of illustrations. John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester (1647-1680) was the most notorious of the Restoration rakes, and a fine lyrical and satirical poet whose work, in Greene’s opinion, was overshadowed by his life of lechery and drunkenness and his association with the decadent court of King Charles II. As his friend Etheridge said of him, “I know he is a Devil, but he has something of the Angel yet undefac’d in him.” This copy is in excellent condition, apart from a single tear to the dust jacket.
